‘Autumn dressing has to be one of my favourite seasons for style’
There’s no doubt that I love summer, but once all the heatwaves have taken that summer feeling out of me, all I can think about is autumn dressing. From layering, cosy knitwear and being able to enjoy a warm drink on a crisp morning. Autumn dressing has to be one of my favourite seasons for style, it’s the time where we can mix up our favourite summer essentials and layer them up with some light layers – transitional pieces are just my favourite, I love being able to wear my wardrobe for multiple seasons.
so, I thought I’d run through some of my key essentials from this summer which I plan to re-wear and re-style for going into Autumn. These, I’m sure, are items that every wardrobe would have in some style, like the classic linen shirt or an alternative a light cotton number, so I’m hoping this sparks some ideas on how you can wear your own pieces into the cooler months and not put these pieces away for the year just yet!
LINEN SHIRT
And of course, I have to start with the linen shirt. This is a very, very, hardworking staple for me, it’s styled from late spring, through to summer and into autumn. It’s definitely a multi functioning piece too, as you can layer it on top of strappy dresses in summer evenings or swimwear as a coverup, to it being layered up with a blazer and lightweight knits for cooler days giving that extra bit of layer without getting too warm. I’ve had my Aligne linen shirt since last year May I believe, and I’ve lost count the amount of times I’ve worn it and how many outfits I’ve got from it. I’ll be pairing it as a classic blazer & jean combo, through to tailored trousers and an oversized lightweight knit – I love the combination of these textures!
WHITE TANK
Now this can be put in the basics category as well, so an item you can keep out all year round! Another great piece that will give you so many options to wear and style. For autumn I’m thinking really effortless street chic looks, like under a crisp unbuttoned shirt with a black blazer on hand with either a classic pair of straight jeans or slouchy tailored trousers. Don’t underestimate the power of a tank too, they can be dressed up for the evenings so perfectly for that uber minimal chic style, a beautiful black pair of wide leg trousers and a classic white tank with a clutch & heels – you’re ready for a dinner!
MIDI SKIRT
I love me a midi, it’s just that perfect piece that looks effortless and goes with absolutely everything. They come in an array of fabrics, so whichever style you have, it doesn’t matter – they’ll all work for autumn. Whether it be a bright colour, a floral print or a satin number. I love the look a knit and a midi give, there’s just something so cool and effortless about the two. I tend to keep my satin number out all year round and always pair it with finer knits to super chunky, added with either chunky boots or knee highs, there’s so any ways to wear!
DENIM SKIRT
Another skirt number! Now if you follow me on Instagram, you will have seen my love for this maxi denim piece. I AM OBSESSED, literally! I’m on the edge of my seat to get my knee high boots out and a chunky knit to pair with this, can you picture the look? I just can’t wait!. It’s not the case that you can only take a denim skirt into autumn if it’s a maxi length, they work in whatever kind of style you have – once again all the options remain the same as the above midi style, you can pair them with anything & everything with still feeling relaxed summer feels. It’s also a great piece to smarten up with a black blazer for daytime work meetings if you want something a bit different to jeans.
CROPPED SHIRTS/TOPS
Cropped pieces are ones you won’t find many of in my wardrobe, I’m quite picky as I’m on the taller side so I have to make sure the fit doesn’t run too short on me. But the few I do have, I absolutely love. I’ve really enjoyed my two linen pieces which are both shirt styles, one from Aligne and the black from M&S. I think with super slouchy tailored trousers and a pair of loafers it gives a real street chic look, not to forget super comfy too! Cropped pieces also work great as layering pieces under knit wear.
THE SUMMER LBD & LWD
The two dresses that always steal the popularity card every summer! I’m sure every single person has one or the other if not both. I’ll be taking my long plissé piece with me into autumn cause it’s ever so versatile, from casual daytime to heels, clutch and a blazer – you’re ready for an evening do. This is another item in my wardrobe that I can’t wait to pair with long boots and a super super oversized black blazer – the silhouette in my mind has me so excited!
‘re-styling your pieces and to get a little mix matching’
Those are my 6 summer essentials that I’ll be taking into Autumn, I hope that’s got you looking forward to re-styling your pieces and to get a little mix matching with existing pieces from your autumnal wardrobe! I’d love to know what other pieces you’ll be taking into Autumn other than these, can never have too many options so I’d love to add some more!
