The Word ‘Influencer’ – Why I Don’t Like It

August 5, 2018

we don’t write about, or document with the thought in our minds of ‘influencing’ our followers in any way….”

Person: ‘Oh so what do you do?’…

“”Influencer””: ‘I’m an influencer’

Person: *thinking to themself* ‘Oh so you take photos of

yourself which then ‘influences’ people to purchase or

do what your showing… great another walking billboard

that’s just going to make me want to buy x y or z and

make an unnecessary hole in my pocket…

‘That’s cool, it must be fun taking photo’s of yourself’…..

Blogging was the first place to share what you love with likeminded people who totally understood your obscure love for the newest thing in stores and the biggest trend hype, or why your not quiet feeling a certain type of footwear trend without getting that ‘oh here we go again’ eye roll– all without the business side of it. The term ‘blogger’ came around, which gave people who documented what they love a new type of ‘role’ or ‘position’ and significance in the fashion industry. And it’s from there things started to evolve…

With the industry giving space to bloggers as a new type of ‘fashion insider’ came the whole business storm. Brands opening up to work with bloggers and collaborate which is completely fine even now if your working with brands, products and collaborations that you truly love or would use in real life.

As social media turned up, documenting your obsessions has become instant, at this present day; with people daily active on Instagram the term ‘Influencer’ has evolved as the marketing industry has opened up a whole field of marketing and believing that people who document what they like or dislike will/have an ‘influence’ on people to buy…

Personally feel like it’s time that it was given a term/name where our hard work is taken seriously and we can hold our heads up high and talk about what we do without having any doubts of being judged.”

Now this is what I dislike – we don’t write about, or document with the thought in our minds of ‘influencing’ our readers in any way… well I know I certainly don’t. Yes, I’m talking about this piece I love or product because it does x,y, or z FOR ME or maybe this is how I would style a clothing piece, so if you have something similar you can take an idea away form it, that doesn’t mean you have to go and buy that particular item, if you do then that is it totally your choice. And I believe that it’s the term ‘influencer’ that has almost made it difficult for people in this field to be taken seriously…

People instantly think, ‘oh you just take photos of yourself, write ‘a bit’ about it (which apparently is all easy) and make people want to buy’.

The term ‘Blogger’ having no negative connation, the term ‘influencer’ on the other hand, can have a negative conception…

I feel like ‘influencer’ automatically portrays some form of psychological manipulation for people to buy whatever is spoken about…

Personally feel like it’s time that it was given a term/name where our hard work is taken seriously and we can hold our heads up high and talk about what we do without having any doubts of being judged.
